Monday, March 22, 2004 recently acquired: His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass) by Phillip Pullman The Pillowbook of Sei Shonagon translated by Ivan Morris The Real Thing by Tom Stoppard "Pygmalion" and "Major Barbara" by George Bernard Shaw The Complete Stories of Franz Kafka The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean another borders trip i've decided that to counteract the stagnation of brain activity which has followed the end of the undergraduate portion of my educational career, i must read more. hopefully this will get my brain juices flowing. because at the moment, i'm feeling devoid of intellectual thought. THAT can't be healthy. i picked up those books at an attempt to get my dendrites growing, because work is just not cutting it. his dark materials is for pure fun, and supposed to be turned into movies a la harry potter or lord of the rings sei shonagon's pillowbook-- if you've really kept up with my blog, you'll remember that this is a journal of sorts, which included lists, anecdotes and other things-- kind of like my very own blog. the real thing is a play by tom stoppard-- same guy that wrote arcadia, rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead, shakespeare in love... i took a playwriting class and discovered i liked his style pygmalion-- a friend is doing the play, and i thought i'd figure out why it's so cool franz kafka - seems like one of those people whose work you should have read the orchid thief - this book was the inspiration for adaptation, so i HAD to get it hopefully these will keep me busy. not to mention i have a whole lot more books sitting on my shelf that i havent read yet (catch 22, three musketeers, and my copy of lolita that i was halfway through but can't seem to find now grrrrrr). friendster rocks today i got in touch with a friend i haven't heard from in nearly 5 years! HI ASH! i found him through friendster, isn't that amazing! you can use it for things other than as the usual diversion from work, or for management of your fob girl fanclub (RSVP-- haha). anyways, i'm really grateful for having the opportunity to speak with him again. best part-- he's an AIM addict like me-- and that's damn wonderful. i hope i'm able to keep in touch this time. situational shyness would you call me shy? i find that i tend to be more or less outgoing depending on the situation. for example, when i was in my mentoring program, i dont think anyone who knew me solely from the mentoring program would dare call me shy. i was required to direct the mentors and mentees in various activities and would have to be loud and ultra friendly, and in short, be a leader. but, i distinctly remember being at a party with very few people i knew, and i was not being very social at all. likewise, depending on my company i will be quiet or loud. if i'm around a quiet people, i tend to be loud, and vice versa. i'm also more outgoing in small groups. i think large groups of unfamiliar people intimidate me. or maybe i'm a constant level of shy/outgoing, and everyone else is at opposite ends of the spectrum. either way, i think it's funny that people call me a social butterfly. i just like having people and friends around me-- i'm not really that social. i think i've learned to get around my shyness for the sake of whatever activities i like to do. but inside, i think i'm still the quiet introvert. or maybe i'm wrong... posted by tha muce -|- 3/22/2004 11:30:00 PM -|- reassuring comments?!?! ---> so far!
