all the world's a stage
and all the men and women merely players
they have their exits and their entrances
and one man in his time plays many parts...

a good friend got back from a year and a half stay in japan, and told me about his experience trying to readjust to being in america. he's super american, and i'm sure he stuck out like a sore thumb most places he went. he had a hard time getting used to being back-- shopping is different, food is different, people have different mannerisms. but most of all, he had a hard time getting used to being accountable again. he was foreign and had no previous experience with the language, so no one expected him to be able to communicate, or get around, and so no one exprected him to know anything about anything. he got to play dumb so to speak (haha), and he also had no ties to anyone while he was there, and had little contact with english speakers (save the occasional IM conversation). he really had no obligations to anyone but himself.

i remember experiencing something similar when i moved to puerto rico. suddenly, i had no ties, but those to my immediate family. i had no obligations to friends, and i was the new girl. no one knew me, i didn't know anyone else, i was just the girl from california. if you've never been the new kid, it's a strange thing. you start all over, you have to build new bridges. apart form that, you can be whoever you want to be. it's not even like changing schools or moving up a grade, since you're completely displaced. it's like in those movies or afterschool specials, you get a CLEAN SLATE. it's really liberating, not having a past.

when i came back, i reassumed my role. i regained all my obligations, my family ties, my responsibilities to other people. it wasn't a bad thing, but at the same time, while i was off starting over, it seemed that everyone had become someone else my absence. and while my friends had a chance to gradually get used to who they are now, i was suddenly thrown back into a situation where i felt like i should have known who i was and who my friends were, and i was really frustrated when i didn't.

i'm glad i'm getting to know my friends again.
