better laundry baskets
i think someone should design laundry baskets that allow you to sort by CARE INSTRUCTIONS and not just "whites", colors", and "delicates". it would make all the difference between your favorite sweater and a horribly shrunken piece of cotton.
at least in my family everyone helps in doing everyone elses laundry, and all the colors and all the whites and all the delicates get separated. because there is so much clothing to do during laundry time (which is something like bullet time but much much much slower), none of us bothers to look at care instructions as we toss things into the washer. there is just too much clothing and too little time to waste it sorting. if you've been to my house during laundry time, you would know what i meant. thus, things that should not be dried get put in a high heat dryer and other such apparel no-nos occur that should not happen.
maybe i'm just a little slow, as in, DUH, YOU'RE A BUM, WE ALWAYS SORT OUR LAUNDRY THAT WAY ANYWAYS, but i think that sorting them this way, before they ever get thought about being washed, is a good way to avoid shrinkage *ahem*.
anyways, i'm sure i've seen laundry baskets that short laundry by colors, or lights and darks, like the one above. but even then, a light or dark piece of clothing is no indication of what temp of water, or how high of heat you can use (or maybe it does and my family just never learned that).
i guess the point is, why do we sort this way? were we just programmed to do this since we were little? or is it somehow proven to be the "correct" way? doesn't it make more sense to sort by care instructions?? it's pretty obvious whether a piece of clothing is light or dark, why not sort at first by wash severity? whether it needs hot or cold water? low or high heat in the dryer? i just think it makes more sense.
