Tuesday, November 11, 2003 CHIGUSA TAKAKO be warned-- possible BATTLE ROYALE spoilers ahead! for those that either keep up with this blog (riiiiight), watch movies with me on a regular basis (are you stegnafied?), or know what battle royale is (shot in the dark) you will get what i'm talking about. for those that don't get it. find battle royale and watch it. anyways. CHIGUSA TAKAKO is the greatest character in japanese teen drama cinema if not in BATTLE ROYALE. anyways, she is a sweet girl she wears her heart on her sleeve, is a great athelete, and is tough as nails. she seems rather smart (there's been speculation that she asked to go to the bathroom to see if she could escape), and is a take initiative, go-get-'em type of girl. in other words, she is my ultimate role model. in my mind, she stole the battle royale show (okay okay, so MITSUKO is way more badass, and arguably SHE was the star of the movie-- after all, she killed the most people, as my brothers say, she looked the best, and was, i guess, the most ass kicking girl. anyways, allow me to disagree, because i like CHIGUSA. but i digress). CHIAKI KURIYAMA has assumed the position of the new asian IT-GIRL, which was formerly held by zhang ziyi. sorry, but there's a new girl in town, and her name is CHIAKI. anyways, at least in my mind, chiaki was able to draw the audience into the character of chigusa, at one moment, channeling chigusa's frustration with the idiotic niida (or nilda, if you're stegna), then the extreme anger when he shoots her and threatens to rape her, and then elation when she dick stabs him. she then returns to her sweet, loving persona, and finally, we feel the extreme sadness of the character when she is dying next to the boy she is in love with. she confesses her feelings for him despite the fact that she knows he will only love her as a friend. and we (or at the very least, I) believed every second of it. who hasn't felt that way?? extremely angry and ready to kick someone's ass one second, and then totally lovesick the next. angry enough to STAB A GUY IN THE CROTCH and five minutes later make you feel sorry for her. so maybe she's a little bipolar. aren't we all? anyways, i'm...
