Saturday, April 19, 2003 PCN rocks! i have to give credit to the PCN crew this semester, this was the best PCN i've seen yet. it was educational and entertaining and dealt with REAL issues. first they had a skit about a tv show chef, a la emeril lagasse, called, "filipino cuisine" the woman on this show was asked to thicken her accent, wear darker makeup, change her set and clothes to appear more "filipino". and yes, they had the obligatory student-who-doesn't-want-to-go-to-med-school skit, but it was more of an afterthought in the context of a skit of a girl who was rather modern and very very anti frou-frou. her parents decided to hold a cotillion for her, even though she was strongly against it. in the end, the girl's grandfather tells the girl that her mother never had a cotillion because they were too poor. her mother sacrificed to come to the us and give her daughter a good life, and she wanted to give her daughter the cotillion she never had. what a SACRIFICE. another skit that stood out was about the passing of a new law after 9-11. these laws required that airport workers speak ONLY english while on the job, that they be US citizens, and some other things that i forgot. as a result, thousands of immigrant workers in the airports, who had been working there for years, were laid off to make room for new, young, inexperienced workers. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. THIS is the thanks they get for years of service? they aren't allowed to speak their native language? they get fired? highly qualified professional come to the us for a better life and all they get are lousy benfits? what the hell kinda crap is that? where's the JUSTICE? finally, there's a skit about troops stationed in the philippines. the resident filipinos are resentful of them because they encourage the prostitute businesses and occupy the country. one of these troops visits his cousin in the barrio and he finds all this and is completely disgusted that he has become part of the problem that he wanted to remedy as a part of the military. how horrible. imagine the guilt that would put on a person. VERY VERY SAD. i'm so proud that this is how PCN chose to represent itself. the skits were well themed, easy to understand, and with very relevant issues.
