songs of the moment: Evanescence - Bring Me to Life, All American Rejects - Swing Swing

link mania!
lotsa neat new links added on the right side...some added to the random links section (for sites with lots of different fun things to look at) and others added to the silliness links section (for one shot fun).

movie night
if anyone wants to check out some dvds at my place (or theirs) i have some good ones: chicago, adaptation, shanghai knights, 8 mile, my big fat greek wedding, the hot chick... oh yeah baybee, let's hear it for the philippines and slack pirating laws ^_^

image matters
i'm watching american idol... it's the wildcard show... the show for all those "almosts"... this guy... is GREAT. he can sing like a mofo. he has feeling and can hit the notes... and he's such a small guy-- what an amazing voice! but those darned judges... they didn't let him through the first time around is because he doesn't look like the "conventional pop star". BUT SHIET, this guy can sing... i'm like floored by his voice, but even more astonished that he didn't advance the first time... is it so crucial that the pop star look like the everyday ho hum pop star?? what a bummer america.

epidemiology: lesson 1 - heart disease stats
heart disease is the number one killer in america. that's bad. and so far, they've had a ton of studies on this in an effort to identify risk factors... so far, they've got a few very good indicators of whether or not you'll have heart disease: smoking, obesity, and poor diet, amongst other things. the only thing is, these haven't been completely attributed to the cause of heart disease. so here's the deal, people that are in the lower socio-economic classes are... something like five times (i forget if this is exactly the number) more likely to get heart disease than the socio-economic group that gets the least heart disease. so it sucks, but that is to be expected right? less money = less food, less resources, less access to good, or ANY kind of health care, just a worse support system overall. so it sucks, but makes sense.

but what about those people that you would consider to be in the higher socio-economic classes? we're talking white collar, upper class, big money making professionals here. what about them? HA, they're still twice as likely to get heart disease as the group least likely to get heart disease. how is that possible?! they certainly have the resources, the good living... what the hell is the deal?? and no, its not because this group eats better, or doesn't smoke, or isn't fat (HA). it's because this group, like all the other classes below it, are privy to the whims of those above them in the corporate food chain. in other words, to some degree or another, these groups HAVE LESS CONTROL OVER THEIR LIVES than the group least likely to get heart disease-- the people at the very very very top.

so is that it? that's the deciding factor? check ths out. a group of bus drivers in SF, was under high risk for heart disease. they are completely victim to their bus schedules-- and the way their bus routes were arranged, they had NO time to rest, NO time to snack, use the restroom, nothing-- for fear they would be late to their next stop. in actuality, there WAS NO TIME to allow people to board at stops. so they were ALWAYS LATE. the drivers were mad, the passengers were mad, everyone was having a crappy time all around. the solution? change the bus schedule to allow for bathroom breaks and for people to get on and off. and guess what happened-- the rate of heart disease was lowered.

so yeah. don't stress! GAIN CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE! ....it's good for your heart.
