note: please don'tbeannoyedwith me, rightnow i'mat a computer where the spacebar isn'ttotally functional, andi'mtiredof mindingit andgoingbackto add in the spaces. therefore, please excuseany inconveniences or headaches you may experience whilereadingthisparticularblog... sadly, this willmake my horrible typing evenworse...justthought i'd warn you... andnow, wihtout furtherado:

classical japanese lit - lesson 4: they used to blog too!

I now had a vast quantity of paper at my disposal, and I set out filling the notebooks with odd facts, stories from the past, and all sorts of other things, often including the most trivial material. On the whole I concentrated on things and people that I found charming and spendid, my notes are also full of poems and observations on trees and plants, birds and insects. I was sure that when people saw my book they would say, "It's even worse than I expected. Now one can really tell what she is like." After all, it is written entirely for my own amusement, and I put things down exactly as they came to me. . . .

As will be gathered from these notes of mine, I am the sort of person who approves of what others abhor and detests the things they like.

~~from the "Pillow Book" (Makura no soshi) of Sei Shonagon

hmm.. it looks like my keyboard is back to normal.
anyways, a little bit before the time this was written, i guess diaries had come into fashion for a high-ranking, literate courtier that could write. most were little more than personal accounts... some were just plain chronicles of occurrences during the day. WELL, Sei Shonagon was exceptpionally awesome. she was super super witty, and not afraid to voice her opinon... and she wrote about the most mundane RANDOM things in this "pillow book", and wasn't afraid to tell it like it was. her Pillow Book was essentially a diary and really the closest thing you could get to blogging in her day-- it even got passed around the court for other people to read... NEAT! some of her diary entries are old memories, personal opinons about things, comments, sketches, and my personal favorite, lists... here are excerpts from a few entries:

from entry 22: Things That Violate Our Expectations:
An
exorcist trying to expel malignant spirits puts on a confident expression... after two hours of chanting the exorcist tires. "The guardian spirit refuses to enter your body. Be off with you... well that did no good at all," he remarks as he takes back the beads. He rubs his forehead, yawns, leans against something, and falls asleep."
When somebody sends off what seems a fairly good poem, it is disconcerting to receive no answer.
Eager to provide herself with precisely the right fan for and important occassion, a woman asks to have one designed by a person whose tastes she trusts The fan arrives the day of the event, decorated with a picture that is not at all what she had in mind.
Also disconcerting are parents who nap together in the daytime when they have grown children-- or worse, grandchildren running about. Even a child of ten or so will probably be quite taken aback by the sight of his mother and father napping together.
from entry 39:
A preacher ought to be handsome. It is only when we keep out gaze fixed firmly on a good-looking monk's face that we feel the holiness of the text he expounds. If the man is ill-favored, our gaze wandrers and we lose track of what he is saying. for this reason, it seems to me that listending to and ugly monk's sermon may actually lead us into sin. But I must not write these things. Although it might have been all right when I was younger, the thought of sin terrifies me now.
When i contemplate my own sinful heart, I wonder about the honesty of those thow make a point of being the first to arrive wherever there is to be a sermon, informing us that they themselves are bursting with piety...

SHOOOT it sounds like a blog to me... she bitches, she whines, she ponders... and that's basically what a blog is, right? your own private space for publicly making your opinions and thoughts acknowledged. and she's so witty about it... rumor has it that she actually had a pretty sharp tongue and that she died a widow in a buddhist monastery as karmic retribution for her writings...

hmm... hope that doesn't happen to me...
