Saturday, October 12, 2002 crouching tiger, hidden agenda after watching crouching tiger hidden dragon, i really wanted to kick stuff. and then i wanted to watch it again. and then i wanted to learn how to use a sword. and then i thought about chow yun fat and michelle yeoh's characters. okay okay, bad segue, but i had to get here some how. anyways. how sad for them to have been in love for SOOO long, but not be able to express that because of the ties they had to each other... if you dont' know what i'm talking about, Li Mu Bai (chow yun fat's character) was brothers with the fiancee of Yu Shu Lien (michelle yeoh's character). not REAL brothers i don't think... blood brothers, or some equivalent. anyways, shu lien's fiancee dies, but li mu bai and she continue to be friends, and eventually fall in love. anyways, they thought it would dishonor his memory to get together, but in the end no one was happy! well, no i take that back, i guess they finally professed their love for one another in the end, but by then it was too late! what REALLY gets me, is that their friends kept telling them that they should be together... and that instead of making their dead brother upset, or betraying him, it would be good for them, and that he would approve and probably encourage them to be together... now that he's dead of course. question: is this sound thinking? is it really okay to hook up after that? or is it still bad? what a dilemma. in addition to that, i was watching a TV program that was following the development of children into post pubescent teenagers... what they found is that their moral values seem to change as they get older... black and white suddenly becomes varying shades of gray. the classic example is the man who has a wife who is terminally ill. however, there is a cure, but it he could not ever possibly afford it, and what it comes down to, is, his only option to save his dying wife is to steal the cure from-- wherever they're storing it or whatever. so anyways they asked these kids of various ages this question. without fail, the younger kids insisted that stealing was wrong, and that it could never be right, even to save a loved one. the older kids gave more grayish answers-- more or less, they acknowledge the wrong part, but the greater good of the outcome negates that whole stealing is wrong thing. interesting. so back to crouching tiger... who is right? who is wrong? would it have been okay for LMB and YSL to get together, despite the dead fiancee/blood brother? is it right for them to deny themselves happiness even after he's died? how does this translate into REAL LIFE... hmm... that's what i'd like to know. posted by tha muce -|- 10/12/2002 02:48:00 PM -|- reassuring comments?!?! ---> so far!
