classical japanese lit - lesson 1: japanese dream theory
kimi ya koshi
ware ya yukikemu
omooezu
yume ka utsustu ka
nete ka samete ka

Might you have come here
or did i perhaps go there?
I cannot recall...
Was it dream or reality?
Was i sleeping or waking?

~credited to the Ise Virgin at the time...

"western" dream thought (or i guess freud) has taught us that dreaming about someone means that YOU want them, that YOU want to see them; your subconscious is telling you that they are somehow enough of a prescence in your life that you will them to appear before you, while you are sleeping.

not so in japanese poetry. like WHOA, they believe that if you see someone in your dreams, THEY willed THEMSELVES into your dream! pretty neat huh? okay, fine so maybe it's not that cool - but imagine how differently we'd interpret our dreams if we thought like this...

anyways, that's what the above poem was about. this beautiful priestess met with the governor of another province, who was trying to hook up with her. this of course, her being a preistess and all, was kinda bad, so they had to keep things hush hush. anyways, the preistess sent the governor this poem cuz i guess she fell in love with him and she must've dreamed about him that night. they never got to get, uh, cozy, cuz the governor had to leave and so they both got sad. yeah.

and thus, i christen my blog.
